Rachel, Rachel (1968)

Starring: Joanne Woodward, Kate Harrington, Nell Potts, Estelle Parsons, James Olson

Directed and Produced by: Paul Newman

Summary: Joanne plays Rachel, a 35 year old school teacher who still lives with her mother in a small New England town. Their apartment is above her father's (who has since died) funeral home. Rachel hasn't ever had a man in her life and when an old school friend returns and takes an interest in her, Rachel starts to rethink her life (or lack thereof).

Trivia: Watch for a foreshadowing scene by Estelle Parsons who will later go on to play Roseanne's mother in the ABC sitcom... Nell Potts, (Newman and Woodward's daughter Eleanor Newman, who now oversees Newman's Own Organics) played Rachel as a young girl.
Originally called "A Jest of God", Warner Brothers gave them a budget of $700,000 and PN & JW worked without salary to save costs.
The film was shot entirely on location in Danbury, CT.

The Newman Factor:8. Paul won a Golden Globe for his directoral debut but was slighted by the Academy without even a nomination.

Rating:7. Joanne won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of the shy reserved Rachel. It was nominated for Best Picture, losing to Oliver!. Other nominees were Funny Girl, The Lion in Winter, and Romeo and Juliet. Do you think it ever had a chance??
